YOU ARE BETTER

“But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.” (1 Kings 19: 4)

That is the Focal Scripture of Streams of Joy Devotional today.

In our Focal Scripture, Elijah protested to God that he had had enough, and that he was not better than his fathers. Notice that Jezebel had earlier sent a messenger to Elijah to threaten him with death. Because of Jezebel, Elijah began to judge himself as being not better than his fathers. Because of Jezebel, Elijah began to see himself as someone who was not an improved version of his older generation. Elijah saw himself as less.

The spirit of Jezebel is that spirit that wants you to believe that your past generation is, and will remain better than you. The spirit of Jezebel is that spirit that believes that you will never do better than your past generations. The spirit of Jezebel is that spirit that wants you to believe less in yourself. The spirit of Jezebel is that spirit that makes you think less of your capacity and chances. The spirit of Jezebel wants you to be less.

Friend, hear me as I hear the Lord: you are already better than your fathers. You are better than your older generation. You have a better covenant than those who went ahead of you. Your destiny shall be more pronounced than the destinies of your fathers. Your name shall be heard more than the names of those who went ahead of you. You are of a better generation. You belong to that generation that does better than their fathers.

Because of the threat of Jezebel, Elijah concluded that he was not better than his fathers. He concluded that his older generation was better off. Hear me as I hear the Lord: it will never be said that your older generation was better off. No matter the heights your fathers attained, you will exceed them. No matter the goals your fathers achieved, you will excel above them all. You will hit more targets than your fathers hit. You are a better generation.

Any voice that says your fathers shall be deemed better than you, is a voice from the pit of hell: never believe them. You are better already, and you will remain better and do better than your fathers did.

Isaiah 58: 12 says: “And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.”

Declare With Me: In 2026 and beyond, I am better and will do better than my fathers, in Jesus’ name!
